ORACLES OR ORATORS

Illustration of a Demosthenes (384 BC-322 BC)

The title of my article today is of great concern to me because of recent activities of some men of God, those who have brought some shame and disrepute to the name of Christ yet claim they represent Him and speak for Him. We are mandated to speak as Oracles whenever we adorn the garment of clergy and stand as Servants of the most High, we are expected to represent divine attributes and express His values, but the opposite is often the case.

Orators are different from Oracles; they are eloquent speakers who articulate their thoughts and opinions so very well that they hardly struggle to convince their hearers and often easily persuade people to their viewpoints. Orators usually excel in the glorious field of politics where debating skills are put to test and those who can use words better and possess some form of charisma win the trust of people more and get their votes, not necessarily those who can deliver on their promises.

Oracles are those who speak for some deity, priests who consult the gods and thereafter speak on their behalf, these are those who communicate the very thoughts of the divine for humans to understand and concur. That’s why the scriptures tell us (Preachers and Speakers) to speak as Oracles of God not just Orators for men in 1 Pet. 4 v 11, ‘if any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God, if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God gives, that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ…’

CHECK ON: REASONING OR LOGIC

There was a fellow who spoke so eloquently as an Orator and people felt he was speaking as an Oracle. In fact, they hailed his golden voice as that of the gods, he may have delved into spiritual territory in his speech as a politician which was a realm outside his turf, and he took glory as a priest of God. The Possessor of Heaven and Earth was angry with him and struck him dead on the spot. God is saying to us that there is a difference between Oracles and Orators, this account is in the Bible, Acts 12 v 21-23, ‘and upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel sat upon his throne and made an oration unto them, and the people gave a shout, saying it is the voice of a god and not a man, and immediately an Angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory, and he was eaten of worms and gave up the ghost.’

Believers should be aware of the difference, though I strongly believe that we have not been hearing Oracles lately and have been mesmerised by great orators behind the pulpits. Let me quickly point out that there is nothing wrong with being an Orator at all, in fact, it’s a gift that many should pray for and I covet very earnestly, however, it’s important to note that One can speak so well as an Orator and yet not represent or voice out the words or opinions of God on matters of concern to us.

While I was younger, I recall a visit to an ‘Ifa Priest’ and my mother had wanted this priest to speak on behalf of the ‘Ifa’ deity as an oracle, she had made some requests on my behalf and wanted to know what Ifa thinks and what we should do. Most of our parents had one or two of such priests they consulted to divine for them and speak the minds of the deities they believed had knowledge of the future. I cannot recollect what eventually happened so it’s of no consequence for us today.

I hope you have been Inspired today with this piece; I may do a sequel on this title to let you know the traits of someone speaking as an oracle from those who speak as orators. There are very clear signs to identify Oracles and discern Orators, I’ll be glad to know if you might be interested in the sequel, kindly drop me a note pls.

Blessings and shalom.
